Fluffs
Let me tell you about “fluffs”.
In our family we don’t use the word “fart”, we have decided that “fluff” is a better alternative; I dunno, but I find the word ‘fart’ coming out of a young child’s mouth to be a bit too course and uncouth, call me old fashioned if you like, but it’s just the way I feel, besides, using the word “fluff” means that Tim’s family don’t suffer from conniptions every time my boys talk about the sounds coming out from their bottoms! Anyway, I was told a story just the other day about how our use of the word “fluff” instead of “fart” has affected another family we know.
Kael and I went visiting the other week and while we were there he needed to do a fluff - we are endeavouring to teach our kids manners when it comes to the “bottom burp”, as in, if you feel a fluff coming you move to another space where there are no people, so you don’t asphyxiate them when you fluff. Of course at this stage in their lives, fluffs are quite a wonderful experience and often received with gales of laughter and giggles - to be honest, I don’t know if the fascination for fluffs is something they will ever grow out of!
Kael was inside playing with the girls and I was outside enjoying the sun talking to the adults when Kael came bounding out of the house saying very dramatically, “I’ve gotta do a fluff!” I was, I have to admit, just a little bit embarrassed. Anyway, I told him to find a space where there were no people and do his fluff. By now the girls had all come outside too going “huh?” with puzzled looks on their faces, and all the while Kael was dancing and jigging around as he kept saying he needed to do a fluff! I thought he must have needed to do wee the way he was bouncing around!
Inevitably I was asked, “what’s a fluff?” by my Lebanese friend, who had absolutely no idea what was going on. And so I explained. Later his wife told me that they were really taken by the word and her husband and girls were using it all the time now!
