It’s Ok Mummy!
The other day I was in the kitchen washing dishes (seems to be a fairly regular occurance - just lately I’ve been feeling like I’m spending the entire day in the kitchen!) when I looked up to see B (my oldest) balanced on a small wooden stool which was balanced on top of the glory box, standing on tip toes, stretching, trying to reach the ceiling to stick up the paper balloon he had made ~ he wanted it to be a helium balloon!
Needless to say, I freaked a little! I was having Looney Tunes visions. You know, when Daffy or Buggs are balancing precariously on top of a multitude of boxes, chairs, ladders, tables, spinning tops all somehow balancing on top of each other and invariably there is an amazing crash with things going everywhere. If it’s Daffy or anyone else it’s a disaster, but if it’s Buggs, well somehow he manages to get out of it.
Anyway, as I’m freaking at the kitchen sink and about to rip the gloves off and rush over there, B said, “it’s okay mummy”. He was quite calm about it and very reassuring, while I was suggesting other safer ways he might reach the ceiling without causing himself serious injury.
I haven’t yet read ‘Wild At Heart’ although T has (I will read it, it can only be a good thing for a mum of three boys to read). Anyway, I know it says stuff about letting boys be boys and doing “dangerous” stuff, like climbing trees - it’s okay if they fall out and break a leg!! Aaaaggghh!! Just the thought freaks me out slightly. So it was very, very hard to control my “mother’s instincts” and not rush over there, making sure my biggest angel didn’t hurt himself.
He ignored my every suggestion ~ like getting the step stool which was taller than the one he had and putting a blanket underneath it so my glory box wasn’t getting anymore scratched (two boys driving and banging cars on it have taken their toll already) and letting me hold the step stool to keep it steady.
Every suggestion was met with “it’s okay mummy” and he went ahead and did it despite my motherly concern!
My little boy is growing up!
